BASIC FUNCTION

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for all preventative maintenance and mechanical operations repair as well as the general upkeep and physical condition of the production and packaging departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform all assigned tasks with the highest commitment to safety – with respect to OSHA compliance and all Natural Soda policies.
  • Read blueprints, schematics, diagrams, or technical orders to determine methods and sequences of assembly.
  • Install mechanical parts and hardware in housings or assemblies, using precision and hand tools.
  • Repair, rework, and calibrate hydraulic and pneumatic assemblies and systems to meet operational specifications and tolerances.
  • Rebuild and/or replace all types of power transmission components.
  • Precision alignment and installation of power transmission components.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical devices in support of process plant.
  • Provide on-call support after hours, including nights/weekends/holiday support.
  • Collaborate with all departments to solve plant reliability problems.
  • Utilize CMMS to ensure accurate maintenance materials tracking and inventory.
  • Successfully pass a 4G weld test.
  • Detail-oriented and able to work autonomously with minimal direction.
  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

None

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING

Formal training required in hydraulic, pneumatic and power transmission systems. Degree/Certification related to industrial mechanical systems or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

EXPERIENCE

Prior experience in production and/or operations preferred.  Successful candidate should have practical experience with 480 volt industrial plant systems. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Advance understanding of systems, operations, packaging and other facilities operations in a processing plant.
  • Practice in the use of schematics, piping diagrams, structural and mechanical drawing.
  • Use of precision instruments used in alignment and set-up of rotating equipment.
  • SMAW and GTAW welding processes
  • Basic steel fabrication and layout
  • Fundamental lifting and rigging for heavy equipment.

 

Skill in:

  • Advanced understanding of facility operations and maintenance.
  • Precision measuring and instruments such as dial calipers, dial indicators, machinists level.
  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. Communicating clearly and effectively in English, orally and in writing.
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments independently.
  • Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Forklift operation

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals. 
  • Ability to operate effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

  • Hand tools, industrial tools, hydraulic tools, precision tools.
  • Power tools, saws, presses, drills
  • Welding equipment, acetylene cutting tools
  • Hydraulic jacks, come-a-longs, chain fall, rigging.
  • Forklifts and wheel loaders

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee is frequently required to walk, talk or hear. Employee is occasionally required to sit, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; taste or smell, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently required to use close and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is performed frequently in both outdoor and indoor environments. Outdoor environments include exposures to summer and winter temperatures. 
  • Work environment occasionally involves exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles.
  • Work environment occasionally involves exposure to high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • The employee's working conditions are typically moderately loud and occasionally very loud. Employee must be able to work schedules as assigned, including weekends, evenings and holidays, and must be available for call-out during emergencies, inclement weather or other critical events.
