Job Title:            Quality Control Supervisor (Laboratory)

Reports To:        Technical Manager

Basic Function

Oversees and participates in daily functions of the laboratory; recommends changes and improvements to the laboratory.


  • Cooperate with HSE (Health, Safety and Environmental) Manager to comply with all regulatory requirements for plant operations.
  • Learn and follow safety procedures for all equipment and report all incidents regardless of severity.
  • Oversee laboratory technicians
  • Work closely with the Quality Assurance team to pass audits and inspections.
  • Support the Quality Assurance Supervisor in a variety of QA functions
  • Inspection of some incoming raw materials
  • Conduct training for laboratory employees
  • Participate in new product development to ensure proper quality assurance and control plans can be implemented prior to beginning production.
  • Report to management on quality issues, trends and losses.
  • Participate in internal and external quality audits
  • Collaborate with sales and operations to ensure product quality
  • Collection and analysis system of statistical data for quality purposes
  • Participate in safety, plant, and department meetings
  • Other duties as assigned


Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with Natural Soda's policies, procedures and applicable laws including: interviewing, hiring and training, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Ensures and supports an atmosphere of Safety for all team members, vendors and visitors. Cooperates with the Safety officer for reviews, investigations, safety meetings and new regulatory safety implementations.



Simple Office Equipment; equipment requiring involved set up, adjustments and operational procedures (e.g. personal computer, scanners and digital copier, printer).

Hand and power tools, specialty tools. Heavy- and light-duty equipment and vehicles, two-way radio, cellular phone, PDA.   

Software: MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), Internet Explorer, Adobe, Great Plains, Intelex, RIMS


Degree: Bachelors Degree preferably in Chemistry. Training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.


Prior experience in quality and laboratory preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Administrative principles and practices including goal setting and program budget development and implementation.
  • Technical understanding of systems, operations, packaging and other facilities operations.
  • Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.
  • General office procedures, policies and practices, as well as basic knowledge of computer and other general office equipment.

Skill in:

  • Excellent customer service techniques.

While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee is frequently required to walk, talk or hear. Employee is occasionally required to sit, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; taste or smell, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Frequently required to use close and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Work is performed frequently in both outdoor and indoor environments. Outdoor environments include exposures to summer and winter temperatures. 
  • Work environment occasionally involves exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles.
  • Work environment occasionally involves exposure to high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • The employee's working conditions are typically moderately loud and occasionally very loud.
  • Employee must be able to work schedules as assigned, including weekends, evenings and holidays, and must be available for call-out during emergencies, inclement weather or other critical events.
  • The employee is required to occasionally be on-call.
